Real Estate Success in the Digital Age

If you’ve been a real estate agent for years, we don’t need to tell you that what it takes to be successful has changed enormously. In the 80s and early 90s, real estate agents could rent a building, hang a sign, and place some print ads in the local newspaper. With a smile, a warm handshake, and a lot of hard work, business could be great.

Once the internet came into the picture, the web has increasingly become part of the real estate agent’s life. Now things are changing so rapidly that we don’t deal with changes in decades; what worked last year may not work now, and there is a continual challenge to stay ahead of the game in this competitive business.

Recently, real estate news source Inman interviewed a panel of successful realtors and reported on their habits. One of the strategies that agents depended on was being savvy online.

Panelists said that having an effective website which ranks high in search results is actually more cost-effective than purchasing search engine advertisements – and the marketing is more sustainable.

David Kramer, executive vice president of Hilton & Hyland in Beverly Hills, stated that he has three in-house employees working on his website’s SEO (search engine optimization). He recently won a $30 million listing through connections on his online presence, thanks to the efforts of his online marketing team.

Kramer stresses the importance for agents to have qualified people working on search engine optimization. “That is your lifeblood going forward,” he said.

Tanya Dzhibrailova, an agent at San Francisco-based Zephyr Real Estate, said that Yelp (where she ranks in the top 5 of her market) has had a “tremendous impact” on her business.
